Business Continuity Strategy and Implementation

Business Issue:

In the wake of 9/11, this Life Insurance company needed assistance in reviewing its exposures in the event of a catastrophic incident affecting its current downtown location as well as its newly-created Franklin facility located 15 miles away.   A business continuity plan (BCP) was required to ensure uninterrupted service and support.

  • Determined the “critical path” business and technology functions required to provide ongoing support and service, taking into account the increase in activity that may occur due to the nature of NML’s business
    • Impact analysis
    • Threat analysis
    • Definition of impact scenarios
  • Reviewed each business and technology function, clearly defining:
    • Primary ownership
    • Secondary ownership
    • Primary operating model
    • Secondary operating model
  • Created a documented BCP manual, including processes and transition procedures to go from the primary operating model to the secondary operating model
  • Reviewed the BCP with the Steering Committee to gain support and finalize input
  • Recommended an implementation, testing and maintenance plan to ensure ongoing organizational readiness
